HealthyLife cover model Patti Garland sits in a stylist's chair at Brookfield's SoHo Salon, open to suggestion. She is there for her pre-photo shoot consultation with Inson Neglio, salon manager and stylist.
Her already short hair has a good base style, Neglio tells her, but it needs more definition of color. So Neglio applies a warm and rich darker base shade, perfect for the winter months. She also adds an icy, cool tone with strategically placed white highlights, saying everyone needs to show a little boldness with their hair. Garland was game.
Garland's short cut also needed better transition between lengths, so Neglio keeps it longer in front but shortens some of the top layers to eliminate heaviness. She also cuts the edges around her ears, face and neck into a softer, more feminine fringe.
A woman with short hair has to have the confidence to carry it off, Neglio says. "But a woman needs a feminine cut," she adds. "It shouldn't be short like a man's."
Updated cut, color and style behind her, Garland is ready for her day in the spotlight. First it's a trip back to Soho Salon, where Neglio styles her hair and applies makeup from the salon's collection of Jane Iredale mineral products. Then it's off to LJ Edwards in Brookfield, the shoot location for HealthyLife's January cover. Owner Paul Coleman gave us carte blanche to move his furniture and home accessories as needed. So magazine design director and cover photographer Krista Hicks Benson scouted the showroom ahead of time, picking background vignettes as well as certain accessories and pieces to use, including one of her favorites -- a turquoise-hued leather chair.
Of course, we arrived at LJ Edwards on shoot day with Garland's clothes and accessories in tow. Several days earlier our HealthyLife team met Garland at Kohl's in Brookfield, where, with the help of assistant store manager Michael Favale and Radha Rose, an area supervisor, we worked our way through the store's large selection. Both Favale and Rose pointed out Kohl's featured designers, made suggestions of items we could pair together, helped us find the right sizes, and were patient as Garland tried everything on and we made decisions about what she would wear for the photo session.
We couldn't have put the shoot together without them -- or without the help of Neglio and Soho Salon and Coleman and LJ Edwards.
